Twixt Seasons

It's officially autumn. We received more rain in September than normal, but it was warm. We've had the odd day of cool sunny weather and even warm sunny weather, but gray and rainy isn't normal for September. I hope it's an aberration.

But somehow, the trees still know what season it is. The island in our bay is covered with balsam and birch, and the birch are starting to turn yellow--ever so slightly, just around the edges, but changing daily. The birches along our private path are dropping occasional golden loonies. Later, the path will look as if it's paved in gold. The pines are dropping extra needles, too. The grasses are yellowing, and the scrub brush has gone riotous red.

It's easier to be patient now, while watching the year wind down and preparing myself for winter, than it is to be patient while waiting for spring. Fortunately I have a beautiful place to wait--both seasons.
