Yesterday I mentioned that the CBC is paying $100,000 for a new hockey "anthem" and suggested they kick in $100,000 to create a prize for a novelist.
Today I remembered that CBC does have its own literary awards. The total purse is $60,000--that's $6000 for winners of six categories (3 French, 3 English) and $4000 for second place in each category.
The money doesn't even come from CBC. It comes from the Canada Council for the Arts. CBC administers it, perhaps taking some money for that administration (which is fair).
Still. There's room for a $100,000 prize for a novel.
